How do they make it so cool? So illegible? Can I do it?
I've recently gone down a serious YouTube rabbit hole on graffiti. SMOE makes narrated real-time videos, which show the whole process, and RESK12 shares POV-style tagging, which makes me wish I was a rule-breaker.
I love watching people make art, and graffiti is a medium I would love to try one of these days. For now, I'm going to content myself with sketching graffiti-style word art on paper.
NOTE: My dear husband has also downloaded a graffiti emulator game on his VR headset: KingSpray Graffiti. It works surprisingly well, but we'll have to wait to see whether it satisfies my urge to do 'real' graffiti or only stokes it.
I'm going to document my dabbles in this genre here until I get to the point that I feel confident enough to write a proper lesson on the subject.
Here's a time-lapse of my first doodle, based on my first name. I found it surprisingly challenging to make the composition balanced and interesting without losing the legibility of the letters. Materials: pencil, fine liner, alcohol markers.
Here's a time-lapse of a doodle based on my middle name. It occurred to me that the word "Hobson" was pleasingly symmetrical, and that guided the shapes of the letters. You'll also notice some styling elements inspired by Celtic knots, with the letters weaving over and under each other. Materials: pencil, fine liner, alcohol markers, white paint pen.
