Baby shower tomorrow! Why not make a whole quilt?
It was 3 in the afternoon. Tomorrow I would be going to a baby shower for another cousin's first child. I had already sent them something from their registry, but it felt weird to be going empty-handed. So I pulled out my fabric bins and decided to make a quick quilt.
Because of how quickly I worked, there was a whole lot of freehanding and hasty sewing on my machine. Any measurements I give are approximate, and as usual, I'd suggest you get inspired by my projects rather than directly trying to copy them.
I liked these three fabrics together, and I thought I had almost enough.
I decided on 16 squares of the whale fabric that I made as big as I could to use the whole fabric - about 8" x 8". I cut the teal fabric into 3-inch strips and used them to frame each square.
Once I had the front made, I added layers of the dark blue fabric as backing and a piece of thick cotton drop cloth as the batting. The goal was to make the quilt super lightweight and washable so they could use it as a floor mat or picnic blanket.
I trimmed it all to the same size and quilted it together using freehand wavy lines horizontally all across the quilt with my machine. These resembled waves and kept all three layers together.
I did an edge binding in the same teal fabric and called it done! At that point, it was about 10 p.m., and I admit I was too tired to hand-finish the binding, so the back looks a bit wobbly.
The final product was about 4 feet by 4 feet and cute as can be.
My cousin liked it!
Update: Six months later, they've gotten a lot of use out of it! It lives in their stroller as an adventure blanket. Not bad for an afternoon project.
